The man standing at the door had introduced himself as Joseph. There had been three more behind him, each wearing blank stares as their eyes met mine. I never did learn their names.

Artem seemed to recognize the man immediately, however I had no idea who he was, nor did I understand what was happening. He had said it was time to go, and Artem simply nodded as if he’d expected it. Where were we supposed to go? We were on a moving train.

“What do you have planned?” Artem asked him.

“We’re going to move you two to a different cabin before it’s too late,” the man named Joseph had replied.

Still sitting on the top bunk, I’d watched the two converse while I kept my silence. When he’d said move us, I’d simply figured he worked on the train. But then his last words hit me.

Before it’s too late.

What the hell did that mean? Too late for what?

“You really think that will work?” Artem had asked.

“Someone will be here waiting for him,” the man named Joseph had replied after nodding. “They will be able to handle him when he comes.”

The two men stared at each other silently, and something had crossed between them that confirmed an unspoken question from Artem. Whatever it was, he seemed to accept this man’s ‘plan’ and had turned to look at me.

“Looks like we have a change of plans, Vivian,” he’d said with a weak smile.

I’d shifted closer to the cabin wall, my eyes wandering back over to the four stoic visitors. The tension in the air had made my skin crawl.

“Do we?” I’d asked, my voice cracking. I’d looked back at Artem, licking my dry lips.

“We’ll need to leave here now. Don’t worry about your things, we’ll get them later.”

I’d looked down at the bag of clothes I had brought and was hesitant to leave them. The phone Shelley had given me was hidden in one of them, and I was getting the strong impression I might need help on this little trip of ours.

Artem followed my line of sight. “If we don’t get them back we can just buy you new things,” he’d said.

Don’t get them back? That didn’t sound as reassuring as I would have hoped.

“Why are we leaving?” I’d finally asked.

Artem had glanced over at Joseph, who ever so subtly lifted his brows, relaying another unspoken message. Artem glanced back at me, his face scrunched up as though he were trying to figure out what to say to me, without really saying anything.

“It’s complicated,” Artem finally said.

“Complicated?” I’d nodded my head thoughtfully. “Well, things don’t seem so complicated to me, so maybe I’ll just stay right here.”

“That would not be a smart idea, Miss. French,” said Joseph.

“It’s Humphry,” I’d corrected, just as Artem had whipped around to look at him. A strange feeling suddenly washed over me as I distantly heard the man, Joseph, apologize, and call me by my name.

Shoving it away, I’d sat up straighter, my resolve to not go anywhere with these strangers strengthening.
